Saturdays on the Square Battle of the Bands

Battle for the Best
     Have you or your band ever wanted the opportunity to grace the Saturdays on the Square stage? Well, in 2012 you will get your chance at the first ever "Saturdays on the Square Battle of the Bands!" This contest will give bands from across the tri-state area a shot at the stage. The winning band will receive a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to open for Mudd River Union on Saturday, July 7th at the official concert series kick-off.

     There is NO entry fee and interested bands wishing to compete must read and accept the following rules and regulations. Click on the links below for a PDF version or Word Document of the rules and regulations and entry form. Be sure to check this page often because as the Battle draws closer a copy of the judging criteria and score sheets will be posted as well.

     Bands must also complete and return an entry packet that must include the following:
  • Completed registration form with each band members signature or legal guardians signature
  • CD, mp3, or video of the band performing at least 3 songs
  • Short band bio
  • Band photo
Entries may be submitted by email to tourgeenvilleky@att.net (SUBJECT LINE: Battle of the Bands), mailed to the Greenville Tourism Commission, P.O. Box 421, Greenville, KY 42345, or hand delivered to the Greenville Tourism Commission office at 112 North Main Street in Greenville. The deadline to submit an entry is Monday, May 21st 2012. Please note that all materials must be RECEIVED by May 21st. Entries received after May 21st, but postmarked on that date will not be eligible. In addition, electronic submissions received after midnight on May 21st will not be accepted either. Lastly, incomplete entries will be disqualified. All bands will be notified of their participation in the June 30th contest no later than Friday, June 8th, 2012.      The Battle will begin at 5:00 pm. A total of 5 bands will be selected from the entries received and will have 30 minutes of stage time to set-up, play 1-3 songs and tear down before the next group. The time slots will begin at 5:00 pm and continue through 7:00 pm and will be randomly assigned the day of the Battle. The Battle will be judged by 3 impartial judges from outside the area who have extensive experiece in the music industry. There will be a brief intermission at 7:30 to tally the judges scores and the winners announcement will be at 8:00 pm followed by an encore performance by the winning band.

     Good luck to any prospective bands out there! We hope to see you this year at the first ever "Saturdays on the Square Battle of the Bands."

*Remember a special rain location is being provided for this concert date. In the event of rain the concert will be moved to Felix E. Martin, Jr. Hall (501 Robert L. Draper Way, Greenville, KY 42345). Please be advised that the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Hall only has 800 seats. Seating will be on a first come first serve basis. When the facility reaches capacity no more attendees will be allowed to enter.

Mudd River Union and the Battle of the Bands Champion

Kick-off Celebration
     The concert series kick-off is reserved to showcase some the region's finest local talent! The evening begins at 7:00 pm with the winner of the first ever "Saturdays on the Square Battle of the Bands." The winning band will get things started and show the crowd why they were selected as the best!

MRU1.jpg     At 8:00 pm one of Greenville's finest local bands, Mudd River Union (MRU) will take the stage! MRU is a band made up of six members with big country hearts and musical souls. The lead vocalists offer three very unique vocal tones that blend in a beautiful harmony. MRU has graced the Saturdays on the Square stage for the last two seasons and are always a crowd favorite. The band continues to grow in popularity across the region. MRU won Owensboro's prestigious Big O Music Fest Battle of the Bands in 2011. They have since been invited to perform the National Anthem at the Tennessee State Capitol and to perform at the Grand Opening of Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, TN.

     It's going to be a great kick-off to a summer of fun! Hope to see you there!

Who Loves You? A Tribute to Frankie Vall

     This weekend is always special because in addition to the concert, the Twi-Light Drive-In Antique Car Show will be taking place on and around the square leading up to the performance. This year Greenville will be welcoming a very special group all the way from New York City! Who Loves You? A Tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is composed of five young Broadway veterans who are fresh off the Broadway show Jersey Boys. Using choreography, staging, and melodious harmonies this group of performers will re-create the music of the great era of the Four Seasons. They are sure to have the audience singing along to the group's most memorable hits. Look to hear songs like Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man, Candy Girl, and Ronnie.

The Alonzo Pennington Band

imagesCA6R4GWJ.jpg     If you were to take a smattering of vintage Allman Brothers, a dash of Stevie Ray Vaughn, a spoonful of James Burton, a dollop of Danny Gatton and a pinch of Jerry Reed then throw them all together you would get Alonzo Pennington, the founding member of tonight's featured band, The Alonzo Pennington Band (APB). Alonzo is a multi-award winning guitar player who has been performing since he was 13. He's also the son of world renowned thumb picker Eddie Pennington.

     APB is known for their great shows composed of classic covers and original songs. They combine their own passion, energy, and drive to create a soulful and unique blend of rock, country and blues. The band most recently competed and won at the state level to represent the Kentucky Blues Society in the 2012 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.

     You won't want to miss the concert featuring Blues and more! See you on the Square!

The Isaacs and County Line Bluegrass

CountyLineWeb2.jpgOn this night two styles of music will be featured Gospel and Bluegrass! The evening will begin at 7:00 pm with Muhlenberg County's own County Line Bluegrass as the opening act. County Line is composed of several young musicians from surrounding counties and features Greenville's own Zeke Walters. This young up and coming group is always a crowd favorite! In addition to their Saturdays on the Square appearances they have had the honor of playing at the Silver Dollar City Bluegrass & BBQ Festival, the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, the Ryman Auditorium, Owensboro's ROMP: Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival, and the movie premiere of "Secretariat."

     At 8:00 pm one of gospel music's favorite groups, The Isaacs, will take stage! The Isaacs are an award winning family that has been singing together for 30 years. They have a unique style that blends tight, family harmony with contemporary acoustic instrumentation that appeals to a variety of audiences. Over the years they have been awarded multiple Dove Awards, gospel music's highest honor. They are also a Grammy and International Bluegrass Music Association Award nominated group.

Owensboro's favorite 70's dance band, Discfunktn'l Groove, is making their Saturdays on the Square debut! Discfunktn'l Groove first played Greenville last fall during the Squash & Gobble Arts Bazaar and Fall Festival where they stole the show with their 70's funky attire. They had the crowd movin' and groovin' to the rockin' dance sounds of the 70's. You can expect another great performance for Saturdays on the Square. Attendees are invited to wear their favorite 70's gear for this groovy trip back in time!

Seven Bridges: The Ultimate Eagles Experience

     Tonight's performance is reserved for all you Eagles fans out there! The band on tap is Seven Bridges: The Ultimate Eagles Tribute Experience. This band provides a stunningly accurate tribute to the music of the Eagles. Using no backing tracks or harmonizers, Seven Bridges re-creates the experience of an Eagles concert from the band's most prolific period. The Show will feature Eagles hit after Eagles hit sprinkled in with some mighty Don Henley and Joe Walsh.
     Seven Bridges is a tour de force of talent combining incredible musicianship, vocal percision and a stage presence that has garnered them nationwide acclaim. They offer the perfect blend of songs to capture all levels of Eagles devotees. Can't wait to see you on the square for our special Eagles night!

All you line dancers and two-steppers won't want to miss this night when The NashVegas All-Stars come to visit Greenville! This group first graced the Saturdays on the Square stage in 2011 and made such a good impression they're back in 2012 by popular demand! The group is composed of 5 dynamite musicians who cover a wide variety of musical territory and keep the dance floor packed. Playing on their Nashville roots they will be performing all your favorite country and rock hits!

Little Texas1WEb.jpg     Grand finale night is reserved for the one and only Little Texas! Little Texas burst on to the country music scene in the early 1990s, born from a handful of guys who were willing to do just about anything to bring their brand of rockin' country to the forefront of the music industry. The band hit the big time in the mid 1990s with a string of top 10 hits and #1 singles. The multi-platinum selling group had a grand total of 15 Top Ten hits and three #1 hit singles "What Might Have Been, " "God Blessed Texas," and "My Love." They have received multiple awards over the years including a CMA, ACM, CMT Award, Billboard Award and multiple Grammy nominations. 
   
    The band is celebrating 20 years of rockin' country in 2012 and the franchise has been completely re-built. They have two new albums under their collective musical belts and still enjoy continued radio rotation of their biggest hits. Little Texas is still in demand and continue to tour extensively as one of America's favorite rockin' country bands. They are sure to close out the 2012 season in true Little Texas style!
